The popularity of coconut milk coffee has been steadily rising in various cafés and coffee shops, offering consumers a new alternative to dairy-based creamers. The trend has attracted attention not only for its unique flavor but also for its potential health implications.
According to Vieta Annisa Nurhidayati, SGz, MSc, lecturer at the Food Service Management and Nutrition Study Program, Vocational School of IPB University, the use of coconut milk in coffee is permissible and safe as long as it is consumed in reasonable amounts.
“Mixing coffee with coconut milk can be an option, especially for those who are lactose intolerant or wish to avoid animal-based dairy products,” explained Vieta.
Nutritional Benefits of Coconut Milk
Coconut milk contains lauric acid, a compound known for its antimicrobial properties and potential to support the immune system. In addition, the fat content in coconut milk is dominated by Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCTs), which are relatively easier to digest compared to other long-chain saturated fats.
This makes coconut milk coffee appealing to individuals who are looking for dairy-free alternatives while still enjoying a creamy texture in their beverages.
Health Considerations and Risks
Despite its advantages, Vieta emphasized the importance of moderation. Coconut milk contains a high level of saturated fat, which could pose health risks if consumed excessively. “For individuals with dyslipidemia, heart disease, or gallbladder problems, it is advisable to be cautious in consuming coconut milk coffee,” she added. Excessive intake of saturated fat can increase the risk of cardiovascular complications and other metabolic disorders.
A Trend with Caution
The rise of coconut milk coffee reflects a growing consumer interest in plant-based and dairy-free alternatives. However, nutrition experts remind the public that balance is key. Occasional consumption may offer benefits and variety, but making it a daily habit without considering fat intake could bring more harm than good. As Vieta concluded, “Enjoy it as part of your lifestyle, but always keep moderation in mind.
